This past weekend just gone we celebrated my younger sister Morgan’s graduation from her Bachelor of Nursing and it was definitely a celebration that needed a special card! I created a graduation card fit for any university graduate – a mortarboard with its own tassel!
I was inspired to make this fun interactive style card from the lovely AnaMarie Palmerin from Just Stamp. When I saw her tutorial, I was inspired to make my own. I was even inspired to have a go at making my own tassel! You can see AnaMarie’s tutorial here.

a look at my finished graduation card
Here is a look at my finished card and a look at the top view of my graduation card. I decided to use the Beautiful Balloon Bundle with my card because the sentiments just fit so well with the theme. Keeping the colours focused on black and white on the card exterior ended up being where the design headed. I must admit this was a *really* hard task for me because I love to add all the frills to my card. I resisted adding bling and all the extras.
a close up look at the finished card
Here is a close up of the finished graduation card. I heat embossed the sentiment using white embossing on the black cardstock and chose to raise this on Stampin’ Dimensionals. This also acted as a ‘stopper’ for the tassel to hold it in place a little bit to stop it “swinging” around the card too much. The tassel is also secured to the middle of the mortarboard with a white square brad.
check out that tassel
Speaking of tassels, I actually made my own! I can’t remember the last time that I made a tassel so I had to reteach myself. A reel might be a good idea to teach this sometime soon, but I do promise they aren’t as hard as they seem. I made my tassel out of the black essentials baker’s twine and used the brad to secure it in place. If you are curious in the mean time of how to make a tassel, the easiest thing to do is search on Pinterest for “DIY how to make a tassel” – there are so many nifty tutorials.
a look at the inside & the fun fold pop out…
Lastly, between the black cardstock I used a beautiful dramatic black and white Designer Series Paper pattern from the Delightfully Eclectic Designer Series Paper and using the tutorial from AnaMarie I have folded it and adhered it between the squares, this forms the interactive fun fold that makes for this fun graduation card. To create a space for the ‘writing’ I cut a square of Basic White and Basic Black to go within this space and then embellished with some Silver Glimmer and a strip of Lost Lagoon which I have die cut with that gorgeous streamer/fringe die from the Beautiful Balloons Bundle.
I loved adding a bit of colour with the Lost Lagoon & Pretty Peacock colours on the inside which was the closest colour in the Stampin’ Up! colour families I could get to the nursing graduates colour!
I had so much fun making this graduation card and it was fun to make something a little bit different. I hope that were able to get some inspiration from my project share today.
Until next time, crafty hugs. xx
