Welcome to part two of the chain card swap series that I am sharing. Did you miss part one? Head on over here and check it out. I will be sharing eleven posts in this series and today is part two.
What is a chain card swap? A group of people participate and it is similar to Chinese whispers where cards get sent around the chain of people and you CASE the card and send it on so that when it gets sent back to the original creator it may look completely different to the original – how fun is that?
Today I am sharing a fun card using the Stampin’ Up! So Refreshing Bundle and I had fun using different layering ideas on this card which is something I always love to do when card making to come up with a fun design that is colourful, rich, has depth but is very layered. Experimenting with different layering ideas is one of my favourite things to do with my card making
For this second blog hop, part two we are all sharing our cards that we CASE’d for Carolina Evan’s card. See below for a list of all the blogs and the beautiful cards where you can hop along and see where the card started and ended. It is very cool to see the progression of a card along one of these chain card swap series.

my finished card as fun as a picnic on a hot summer’s day
Here is a look at my finished card that I had so much fun with for this round. I will admit that this particular card stumped me at first! When this happens I go to colour! Yes, I am a colour girl, I pulled out some of my favourite colours – greens of course and got inspired. I kept the long strip up the left hand side and the small square that was featured towards the bottom and kept the sentiment strip in roughly the same placement. This gave me a base for my CASE of the original card by Annette.
Here is a look at the colour palette and beautiful colour combination that I chose. Who wouldn’t love these gorgeous bright and rich colours. I love beautiful greens and blues which a touch of bright pinks.

some layering Ideas
Next I chose to do one of my favourite things and that head towards my layering ideas which is one of my favourite things to do on a card! It is a bit like building a house! I had already picked my colours and picked the bundle (So Refreshing) that I was working with. Next I wanted to add texture and dimension. I have compiled a list of some of my favourite layering ideas…
- Combine different textures of specialty papers and cardstocks. On my example you can see that I have mixed glimmer papers and carsdtocks with Designer Series Paper. This helps to mix textures and patterns and is a great layering idea.
- Add depth and dimension by adhering some layers flat to the card with Liquid Adhesive and then use Foam Adhesive like Stampin’ Dimensionals to adhere other layers. This helps to achieve varying heights.
- When adding layers it is good to have them touching each other this helps with connection and pulling it all together making it come in as ‘one’.
- Leave some parts of your card with negative space. You don’t need to add an element to every area of your card. It is great to leave some areas with ‘white space’. It helps to balance the design.
- Mix and match stamp sets and dies. If you can it a great way to create something personal to you and customised!
- Try nested dies for a fun layering idea which works well with geometric shapes like circles and squares. Use them together and adhere them at different heights or even off centred. Play around and experiment.
These are just a few ideas – there are so many more layering ideas that you can play around with. Try it out and give a few a go!
a close up look at some details
Here is a look at the finished card. I just loved the mix of the ombre stripes on the Bright and Beautiful Designer Series Paper with the Gingham pattern for the picnic blanket. Such a great mix and it really tied in beautifully with that Black & White gingham ribbon. Gingham and a picnic – perfect!
I really mixed up the textures on this card by adding in some Vellum as well which is probably hard to see in the photo but I added a light bit of Pool Party Stampin’ Blend to add a little bit of a glass effect to the ‘jar’. This worked well to make it a beautiful glass vase instead of the expected picnic glass of lemonade.
There is lots of glitter on the card (of course) with Wink of Stella, More Dazzle Specialty Paper and the beautiful glimmer in those Tinsel Gems!
a bit of pretty for the inside
I repeated some of the elements for the inside with some more of that gorgeous Bright and Beautiful Designer Series Paper which I just love that you can trim either way to get the stripes going up or across. For the inside I trimmed it the opposite way to get more of the stripes. I added some left over flowers and leaves and some of that More Dazzle Paper (heads up – that is retiring soon – quick shop now!)
This card was so much fun to CASE and making it mine with some layering techniques and lots of glitter and glam – it wouldn’t be a Kayla card without it.
Be sure to hop along and see the next gorgeous card in the chain card swap – this is the fun part!
I suggest you start at Carolina’s blog and hop along from there.
