#GDP404 challenge – case the designer (susan wong)
I love playing along with these Global Design Project challenges and these CASE (copy & selectively edit) the designer challenges are one of my favourites because they encourage me to 1) try new things 2) jump outside of my comfort zone and 3) celebrate the designers that I am on this amazing team with because they are all so talented! This week we are all CASE’ing Susan Wong, a fellow designer from New Zealand that I was lucky enough to be on the Stampin’ Up! Artisan design team with a few years back. She is a lovely lady.
I was so inspired by her lovely sample that we are CASE’ing for #GDP404 to try a fun masking technique that I have done before but wanted to pull back out of the stamping closet!
I was so inspired by Susan’s use of the blue tones and the white ‘sprinkles/spritzing’ in her night sky! How adorable does that look?
Straight away I thought of the brand new bundle Little Dreamers. In fact, I actually used it in my challenge project for last week’s challenge. You can see my project here.

how to create an ombre circle with a simple masking technique.
I just had to show you how to do this cool and easy ombre circle that I used on my card that I was inspired to recreate after seeing Susan’s card. I have used this on some projects before and it is so cool, so easy and you only need basic supplies!
You do need a circle die (or a punch!) We have a few that I could suggest which I will list here:
Sometimes dies such as the Reach For The Stars dies are not specifically purchased in mind for the circles but what an excellent reason to buy them! They have six different sized plain circles! Brilliant! The Stylish Shapes do you have a double stitched edge but will still work perfectly for a technique like this one!
With the circle punch you are limited to how far the punch will reach and that is the only limitation, but if you aren’t planning on punching too far it’s fine, you can also simply move the mask and make sure you are just blending within the masked off area.
A star is born – the finished card
The cow is almost floating over the moon? But he just looks look peacefully asleep there.
I love how this turned out, and doesn’t that masked off circle with the blended blues look beautiful? It’s a pretty cool masking technique if you ask me and one definitely to keep in the repertoire.
When I first saw Susan Wong’s card I was first inspired by the beautiful circle and the masking technique idea but also the beautiful blues & sky. This inspired my colour palette that I have featured on my card…
the colour combination that inspired this card…
a close up look at the finished card
Here is a close up look at the finished card.
The cute little cow is coloured in a mixture of Pecan Pie and Natural Tones Stampin’ Blends. She is just adorable.
The stitching on the clouds and the crescent moon really helps to give the card a playful but finished look and helps to set the baby/playful style of this card. I loved varying the heights of my elements and chose to adhere some directly to the card whilst some are adhered with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
The white speckles in the sky I had to add and you will see from Susan’s original that it is something that I have carried through! They are super easy to achieve and all you need is some of Stampin’ Up!’s White Craft Ink Refill and a Water Painter. Add some of the ink refill to a clear acrylic block and water down with just a drop of water. Add some to the water painter and gently flick over your background.
NOTE: this does take a while to dry as it is a pigment ink!
a little look at the inside of the card
Here is a little look at the finished inside of my card.
I added some left over elements from the card front and I know that I tend to go crazy when I prepare elements for a card and so I without a doubt ALWAYS have leftovers. It is not such a bad thing because it means that generally I always have plenty left for the inside and it helps to carry through my design!
I love that little raccoon/squirrel/skunk (have I mentioned I am terrible at knowing what some animals are?) and he is so cute looking like he is there catching the stars as they fall. He just had to be added somewhere to the card.
I hope that you were able to get some inspiration from my card share today and loved seeing a simple masking technique. I would love to see what you make.
