I had so much fun getting back on board this week with my first live video actually done ‘live’ since the end of May. I had a whole lot of fun making a secret fold out card inspired by Sam Calcott from Mixed Up Crafts. This is such a ‘surprise’ fold.
I really wanted to make something fun & funky to go with this super cute Hearts & Hugs Bundle plus play around with some cute embossing techniques.
See below for a link to the video tutorial and free PDF showing how to make this card with measurements and all the supplies.
the finished secret fold out card
Here is a look at the finished secret fold out card all closed with the surprise hidden inside.
I had a lot of fun playing with embossing techniques on this card and digging out the clear embossing powder! Clear powder is not something I use too often but it is a hidden gem as you can do so much with it. On this project I used it both with a stamp and an embossing folder.
For the front of the card I inked this beautiful Dotted Circles 3D embossing folder to create a background that was entirely embossed with clear powder. This makes the appearance of a darker Shy Shamrock colour, but also a beautiful textured shiny finish.
the fun colour combo
I love using bright colours. If you are familiar with my work this will be no surprise. I am a little bit in love with the new In Colours and a few have made their appearance on this card! I enjoyed the mix of brights for this eclectic and fun card.
close ups of the finished card & BELLY BAND
To keep this secret fold out card closed it required a belly band to hold that gate fold design closed. Belly bands are super easy to create and another fun way to make a card interactive.
On this belly band I used a mixture of the Hearts & Hugs bundle with the beautiful circle dies from the Spotlight on Nature dies. These beautiful circle dies are a must have basic for the crafting stash – even if you don’t buy the stamp – you need the dies!
how the secret fold out card works
Upon opening this card this is what is revealed. I used another clear embossing technique with the Drizzling Droplets background stamp to create these panels on both the left and right hand side of the card. I hadn’t used this stamp before but love the beautiful effect of raining drops especially with the clear embossed look to make them appear ‘shiny’.
The beautiful colourful dotty design from the Full of Life Designer Series Paper was perfect to accent the empty spaces on the first ‘scene’ of the surprise fold out card.
folding the card in the middle…
The surprise fold out card is a bit of a ‘secret’. It isn’t until you fold the card together in the middle that it starts to reveal a hidden panel. This mechanism is pretty cool!
and then the secret is revealed
Here is a look at the mechanism revealing itself to fold out to another scene. You could easily leave one of the squares on this design blank for a message or make a panel where I have added the Drizzling Droplets stamp a space for adding a greeting. This is completely open to so many different options.
the beauty of the secret fold card…surprise!
And the second scene is revealed. How cute is that? I added another pattern from the Full of Life Designer Series Paper and some more cute critters and die cuts from the Hearts & Hugs Bundle.
This card does will require a handmade larger envelope as it is 5×7″ in size. I love using Jacque Williams tutorial for making envelopes which you can find here.
This secret fold out card was so much fun to create and I can’t wait to make some more. I hope that you were able to get some inspiration to make your own version of this card. I would love to see what you create, so be sure to come over and join my Stampin’ Up! VIP group (everyone is welcome) and share what you have created.
