Do you love the look of funky geometric patterns and shapes? or the idea of using repeated shapes? I love how quick and simple it can create a funky background on a card.
I sat down at my desk with a colour challenge in hand for this month’s Let’s Craft Together Challenge and I love to have a ‘main’ colour usually, I couldn’t resist the beautiful Fresh Freesia. This colour surprised me that is quickly became a favourite as I am not a purple girl! It’s beautiful purple/pink hue is a gorgeous tone however and it’s so easy to use across a variety of different themes! I decided on this card I wanted to really feature it by created this background using repeated shapes with a brand new bundle released for World Card Making Day – the Heartfelt Hexagon bundle. See below…
let’s craft together blog hop/october colour challenge
The gorgeous colour challenge that we all used featured five colours – can you believe they are all featured on my card? When there are more than three colours, I tend to pick a main colour, a secondary colour and then use the others in small amounts which you can see that I have done here. My two main colours were Fresh Freesia and Berry Burst, I then added small touches of the rest of the colours as small accents. Scroll to the bottom of this post to see what the rest of the LCT team have created this month to inspire you!
a look at the world card making day – heartfelt hexagons bundle
This is a gorgeous bundle and is a bit of a sneak peek from the upcoming mini catalogue that will be coming in January for customers but was released early as a special celebration of World Card Making Day. You can purchase the Heartfelt Hexagon Bundle in my online store here.

a look at the finished card
How cool and dramatic does it look using repeated shapes? It really is a quick and easy way to make your own DIY background. To make my hexagons really ‘stand out’, I took a Blending Brush and some Fresh Freesia ink to light blend around the edges. Even though I am adding tone on tone colour, it helps to slightly darken the edges and to really make them ‘pop’ out from that background!
I chose to use a Fresh Freesia card base as well. I have been using a distressing technique recently of adding ink directly to my cardstock by placing my ink pad at a slight angle and running it lightly across the surface.- it really helps to add a slightly distressed looking surface but adds more tone and colour.
Adding a small layer of Berry Burst and popping up my main layer on Stampin’ Dimensionals finished off the main components of my card front.
a close up look at the details
Talk about using repeated shapes – I used them again when it came to adding the sentiment! This really helps to ground the shape even further by also repeating it as your focal element! The beautiful stamps that come as part of the Heartfelt Hexagons bundle include stunning stamps that coordinate with the punch. I chose to heat emboss one of these in white and lightly blend in Lemon Lolly. I have punched the hexagon once more from the gold More Dazzle Specialty Paper to ‘shadow’ my sentiment.
P.S. That sentiment – I can’t help but think of the Marie Antoinette saying “Let Them Eat Cake”
If you don’t like fussy cutting – I am self confessed fussy cutting addict – then you may want to skip this part!
I stamped and fussy cut out a lot of those little images in the coordinating colours from the colour challenge. I find this sort of thing therapeutic! *wink*
To finish it all off I have embellished with some of my favourite ribbon and some of the gorgeous Parakeet Party In Colour Pearls.
a look at the pretty inside…
What do they say? It’s not show without punch? There had to be a pretty inside to the card. Using some more of my favourite More Dazzle Specialty Paper and some of the Fresh Freesia Cardstock – it’s like a Fresh Freesia explosion on this card. Using a Blending Brush I added some blending in Fresh Freesia and stamping using the coordinating stamps in; Berry Burst, Fresh Freesia and Parakeet Party.
I just love how this card came together, I always have so much fun playing with colour combinations and I loved showing how I go about using repeated shapes on my cards and backgrounds especially geometrics and solid shapes.
