Welcome back to another beautiful week and a beautiful start to Spring here in Australia. I am so excited for the start of the warmer months here in the South Pacific because by goodness I am sick of the cold. I am looking forward to seeing the beautiful flowers and some more sunshine! September is also when we celebrate Father’s Day here in the South Pacific (I know that day is celebrated at different times depending on where you are in the world) but here it is celebrated on the first Sunday in September). For my father in law I decided to make a vintage style card and pull out an older bundle to have a play with some of the newer In Colours and this vintage but classic car which encompasses everything that he would love to celebrate him!
I must admit that creating masculine cards is not something that I go to or do often as I do struggle not to add all the ‘bling’. I did recently make a post about my tips & tricks for creating masculine cards and you can check it out here.

Today I have chosen to create a vintage style card that was masculine and have shared a few tips in this post…

It’s a fun sketch challenge this week for GDP. I love basic style sketches like this one. They build the basic foundation for the card and how you interpret it is completely up to you!

the finished card – vintage style card
Here is a look at my finished card. It was so nice to use these ‘rusty’ looking vintage inspired colours for this masculine inspired card. I did not think I would enjoy making this more classic inspired masculine card but I really did enjoy it and it came together so quickly!
With the sketch this week from Global Design Project I really had the base for my card thought out for me and that made the design come together very quickly. I knew that I wanted to use that trendy looking geometric die from the All That Dies to cover my Wild Wheat background and I actually used the Luster Specialty Paper to die cut those out. It has a subtle shimmer to that paper and I have a tip – you do not have to eliminate shimmer and glimmer from masculine cards!! For this card I thought of that subtle shine as being similar to that metal that would represent that on this classic style car!
the colour combination that inspired this card…
The fun colour combo that inspired my card today I grabbed from my stash so quickly when I knew that I wanted to put together this card. I grabbed the stamp set and dies and knew that I wanted to create a vintage style card and thought of these colours immediately. I have to say that I have been giving Very Vanilla a little bit more love lately. It is not usually a go to colour for me but it can look beautiful and is definitely a must if wanting to create something with a bit more of a vintage twist!
a close up look at my vintage style card
Here is a look at some of that texture and detail. To really accentuate my background, I ran a Copper Clay ink pad over the top of the Copper Clay card base which gave the whole card base some more definition. I find that this really helps to make it appear less ‘flat’.
I also used a similar technique with the Wild Wheat layer after adhere the die cut geometric pieces by using a Blending Brush and Wild Wheat ink, I lightly adding some ink around the edges and lightly around the die cut pieces. This just lightly adds some more definition and texture.
As per the sketch I have added some strips of Designer Series Paper and chose to use a pattern from the Fresh as a Daisy Designer Series Paper as this had a beautiful Copper Clay design that matched with my colour scheme perfectly.
To embellish I added some of the brand new ribbon from the gorgeous All About Autumn suite as I am just a little bit addicted to it as it looks gorgeous and has such a beautiful texture – especially when it is frayed!
Lastly I added some of the stunning Rustic Metallic Adhesive Dots! They fit the Vintage Style Card theme perfectly!
a little look at the inside of the card
I couldn’t have a naked inside and so I have added a layer of Very Vanilla with a Wild Wheat matte with some more of that beautiful Fresh as a Daisy Designer Series Paper and Wild Wheat Luster Specialty Paper. With Wild Wheat ink I added some more blending and a gorgeous stamp from the He’s All That Stamp set.
I love how this fun masculine card came together so quickly. A sketch is definitely a road map to a quick and easy card.
TOP TIPS FOR CREATING VINTAGE STYLE CARDS
- Shy Away from Bright Colour Schemes and Stick with Vintage Colour Schemes like Regals or Neutrals – Subtles can work too if creating a feminine vintage card
- Create grunge or texture – things rust and get old with age – rough it up and make it age – distress the corners – add rips and tears!
- Ink blending the edges makes it look older – google the term “vignette” and give this a go
- Try adding things like lace, doilies, linen thread that look less modern
- Try ink splatters – get messy, the less perfect the better
- Gold or copper embossing looks great on vintage style cards
- Black and white or sepia tones look fantastic on vintage style cards
- Even use things from around the home – torn tissue paper (or scrunch it up and use it in layers) – use your sewing machine and sew directly on your card) – even add tea or coffee stains)
As you can see there are loads of techniques you can use for adding vintage style to your cards. I’d love to see what you make – so feel free to share it with me on my Facebook page.
